Abstract:Arrival is a sci-fi film directed by American director Denis Villeneuve. The original book, A Story of Your Life, is written by a Chinese-American writer Ted Chiang. The paper tries to interpret Arrival from a semiotic perspective.
Semiotics is the study and interpretation of symbols. Semiotics first appeared in the ancient Greek period. Plato, Aristotle and Locke all played significant roles in the development of semiotics. But it was not until the last century that the emergence of twin tower Ferdinand Saussure and Charles Sanders Pearce prompted the development of modern semiotics. This article also has reference to Saussure, Pierce, Zhao Yiheng, Wei Shilin and other famous semiologists.
This article consists of an introduction, conclusion, and three chapters of analysis. It analyzes Arrival from structural semiotics and linguistic semiotics.
The introduction briefly introduces the basic storyline and plot of Arrival. It also introduces the current research on this story by linguists and semioticians, and the significance of this study. The second chapter analyzes the origin and development of semiotics and clarifies the definition and classification of semiotics. The third chapter describes in detail the main plot and characters of the film Arrival. In the fourth chapter, the language of Heptapods that had a direct relationship with semiotics has been discussed. The conclusion part points out the importance and significance of using semiotics to interpret Arrival. Finally, the relationship between linguistic symbol and temporality and space, as well as the batter use of symbols in communication is discussed. From the perspective of semiotics, Arrival is not only a wonderful sci-fi film, but has a clear and realistic significance.

摘要:《降临》是美国导演丹尼斯·维伦纽瓦指导的科幻电影作品,其原著为美国华裔作家姜峯楠的《你一生的故事》。本文是对电影《降临》进行符号学视角的解读。
符号学是对符号的研究与解释,这个词起初在古希腊时期出现,柏拉图、亚里士多德及洛克等人都对符号学的发展起到了很大的作用。但直到上世纪符号学双塔费尔迪南·德·索绪尔和查尔斯·桑德斯·皮尔斯的出现促使现代符号学产生,也一度让更多人认识到符号学。本文也多有参考索绪尔、皮尔斯及赵毅衡、韦世林等国内外著名符号学家的专著及论述。
本文将由引言、三个章节的分析和结论五个部分组成,分别从结构主义符号学,语言符号学来分析《降临》这部作品,其中结构主义符号学将作为文学批评的工具用于《降临》原著小说和文本的分析。
引言部分简要介绍了《降临》的基本故事情节和主要内容,以及目前国内外语言学家及符号学家对本故事的研究现状,以及本研究的重要意义。
第二章详细分析了符号学的起源和发展,厘清了符号学的定义和分类。第三章详细介绍了影片《降临》的主要情节内容和人物。第四章单独选取了《降临》中和语言符号学有直接关系的七桶肢的语言文字,从语言符号学角度分析这种语言文字的特点和结构,尝试剖析语言和思维的关系及其对人类世界的创新影响。
