1 Introduction
Arrival is a 2016 American science fiction drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, based on the 1998 short story Story of Your Life written by Ted Chiang. It stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, and followed by linguist Louise Banks, who is enlisted by the U.S. Army to help translate communications from one of twelve extraterrestrial craft that have appeared across the world. She must find out why they have arrived on the Earth before tensions lead to war. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2016, and was released in the United States in IMAX by Paramount Pictures on November 11, 2016. The plot of Arrival is not only full of complications but bounded with basic linguistic theory, especially semiology, which pushes the plot and makes conflicts.
In the mission, the designer Patrice Vermette led the team to design a hundred different types of circular text, and the text module is defined. Later famous computer scientist and physicist Stephen Wolfram (the creator of Mathematica) and his son took part in the action. Stephen Wolfram contributed a lot of scientific elements to this movie, and his son Christopher wrote code to help the team of scientists to analysis aliens’ language.
The process in the film that aliens, called ‘Heptapots’ by Greek etymologic sources, and human beings tried to understand each other and then trade ideas to show some basics of the semiotics, or more precisely, the linguistic signs.
Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and involves an analysis of language form, language meaning, and language in context. And it includes many sub-fields that focus on a grammatical study of language, such as phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics and semiotics. Semiotics (also called semiotic studies) is the study of meaning-making, the study of sign process (semiosis) and meaningful communication. This includes the study of signs and sign processes, indication, designation, likeness, analogy, allegory, metonymy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication. Semiotics is frequently seen as having important anthropological dimensions, for example, the Italian semiotician and novelist Umberto Eco proposed that every cultural phenomenon may be studied as communication. Some semioticians focus on the logical dimensions of science, however, they examine areas belonging to the life sciences - such as how organisms make predictions about, and adapt to, their semiotic niche. In general, semiotic theories take signs or sign systems as their object of study: the communication of information in living organisms is covered in biosemiotics.
