Abstract：Tender Is the Night is a semi-autobiography of Fitzgerald, in which Fitzgerald wrote about the psychosis and the moral confusion of the roaring Jazz Age. The main character Dick is the typical tragic image in Fitzgerald’s works. He represents the majority of young Americans and his experience reflects the American society at that special time. In the Jazz Age, young people were lost in money worship, moral decline and desires for success and wanted to be a member of the upper class, all of which are in conflict with Dick’s ideals and morality, and finally sent him into great pain and loneliness. 

This thesis focuses on Dick’s tragedy, trying to analyze it from the perspectives of personal factors and external factors. The personal factors include Dick’s character, career and emotional life chiefly related with his marriage. These factors lead Dick to make some wrong choices. And the external factors include the social environment—the Jazz Age, and the conflicts between upper class and middle class. Dick’s tragedy is the product of the special historical period in America so that external factors also play a decisive role in his tragic end. Through the analysis of personal and external factors, the thesis tries to clarify the specific causes of Dick’s tragedy.

论《夜色温柔》中主人公迪克的悲剧性

摘 要：《夜色温柔》是菲茨杰拉德的一部半自传体小说，菲茨杰拉德在小说中描写了爵士时代的精神和道德的混乱。主角迪克是菲茨杰拉德作品中一位典型的悲剧人物形象。他代表了大多数美国年轻人，他的经历反映了那个特殊时期的美国社会现象。在爵士时代，迪克在金钱崇拜、道德沦丧和追求成功中迷失了自我，并且想要成为上流社会中的一员，所有这些都与迪克的理想和道德相冲突，最终他陷入了巨大的痛苦和孤独之中。

本文聚焦迪克的悲剧，试图从个人因素和外部因素的角度对迪克的悲剧进行分析。个人因素包括迪克的性格、事业和婚姻情感生活。这些个人因素使迪克做出了一些错误的选择。外部因素包括社会环境——爵士时代，以及上层阶级和中产阶级之间的冲突。迪克的悲剧是美国那段特殊历史时期的产物，因此外部因素也在他的悲剧结局中起着决定性的作用。本文试图通过对迪克个人因素和外部因素的分析，阐明迪克悲剧的具体原因。
