Abstract:As one of the most dynamic words, “and” has been underrated by many English learners who are oblivious of how it is such a unique conjunction word. With “and” as the conjunction, for instance, the semantic meaning of a sentence is rendered in such an ambiguous way that the narrative is partly open to the interpretation of the readers.
And the syntactic and semantic functions of “and” are widely used in Genesis, the King James Version.
Syntactically, most paragraphs in Genesis start with “and”. This kind of parataxis is deliberately arranged in Genesis. As the most famous and widely read scripture, the Bible should possess the feature of reading and reciting facilely and rhythmically. And the parataxis Structure contributes to the sonorous musicality and rhythmicity.
Semantically, “and” is an objective conjunction that reduces the subjective interpretation of King James Version from the scripture. The frequent use of “and” lays down the implicit and objective narrative of the Bible. The degree of trust in the scriptures is determined by the readers themselves, but the repeated use of “and” serves to present God as an omniscient creator and merciful redeemer. At the same time, the ideas of puritanism can also be understood through “and”.
