Abstract:Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories written by James Joyce, which takes Dublin, the capital of Ireland, as their setting. All of the 15 short stories focus on a common theme, that is the widespread, callous, insensible and lifeless mental condition of the late 19th and early 20th century Irish society. With the spiritual paralysis, people in different stages of life were experiencing emotional paralysis. By analyzing the characters of the three heroes in the three stories, namely “Araby”, “The Boarding House” and “A Painful Case”, their views of love and emotional paralysis can unfold step by step. The epiphany of the three heroes is based on their views of love. The analysis is significant for us to understand the characteristic of the three heroes and even other heroes in Dubliners.

1. Introduction
1.1 Background of Dubliners
Dubliners is James Joyce’s early and prestigious work. It is the most famous collection of short stories in the West in the 20th century. The collection is published in 1914 and the 15 short stories in it are set in the background of Dublin, which is the capital of Ireland during the period from 1920s to 1930s. The heroes in these stories are mainly the citizens of lower and middle classes. Fifteen stories present fifteen different pictures of life, which profoundly reveal quite a few factors of humanity, living conditions, social reality of Dublin. James Joyce pides his short stories into four categories in each of which he focuses on a particular stage of life including childhood, adolescence, mature life and public life. Yang Yang says: “James Joyce has turned his focus to the spiritual world of his heroes” (2006: 64). In Joyce’s view, this oppressed city with narrow concepts is filled with a kind of widespread apathetic and lifeless paralysis condition of the Irish society at the turn of the century. It also reflects the universal symbolic meaning in the western world. “Since the 11th century, England had implemented colonial domination on Ireland, and Irish culture was under the colonial repression of England, which resulted in the predicament of the development of Irish culture in the early time. Irish culture was sentenced to death for hundreds of years” (Nilsen, 1996: 3).
