In English culture, the cultural connotation of blue belongs to two extremes. Sometimes it represents the noble status, strict regulations and people’s passion for something. It also indicates a low mood. In Chinese culture, blue is often used as an “evidence”. (Cao Jin, 2005)

Green suggests young, novice and inexperienced in English culture. In Chinese culture, green represents spring, symbolizing newborn and hopes, and life and vitality. However, green also means unfaithful in Chinese. (Cao Jin, 2005)

2.1.2 Basic Colors in Chinese and English

As Brent Berlin and Paul Kay (1969) pointed out, different nations have different numbers of color terms. There is little difference in the classification of basic color words between Chinese and English language.

Nowadays Chinese basic colors include white, black, red, green, yellow, blue, brown, purple and gray.

English has the eleven basic color terms, that is, white, black, red, green, yellow, blue, brown, purple, pink, orange and gray.
