Through the description of Kathy’s thoughts, actions, speech, the author analyzes the characters of Kathy, thus Kazuo Ishiguro’s characterization will be revealed and the theme of this book will be understood. Readers will find out how this kind of characterization related to the book’s theme. So that they are able to have a better understanding of the writing style of Kazuo Ishiguro and this probably can arouse their thinking about the meaning of human existence. So it is very important to analyze Kathy’s characters combining with some details in this book. Detailed analyses are as follows.

2.2.1 The Using of First Person Perspective

The entire book adopted the first person narrative to relate the whole story. Kathy was a functional figure who played a crucial role in the extension of the novel’s text structure and theme. Moreover, to some extent, this book can be regarded as a memoir of Kathy. Evidence could be found in the first sentence of the book “My name is Kathy H. I'm thirty-one years old, and I've been a carer now for over eleven years”(2005: 3). The whole story adopted first person perspective, Kazuo Ishiguro used “I” to tell this story. It was form Kathy’s narration that readers got to know about this story. They were sympathetic with the miserable lives of the clones. Undoubtedly, Kathy was the only channel for the readers to connect with this story and the world in the book. Her narration was the sole material recorded that cruel world. 

Kathy’s character was ambiguous at first glance. Her narration was full of daily words and her mind was full of memories about the past things (Zhang Shihui, 2016:15). However, through the analyses of the text, some of her personality traits could be inferred. From Kathy’s words, her inner self could also be explored. There were two features about Kathy’s characteristics. The author would focus on the first one in this part. The second one would be elaborated in the next part.
