1. The Background and Significance of the Topic

1.1 Research Background

William Golding was born in a family of intellectuals in Cornwall, southeastern England on Sept. 19th , 1911. He had a mother, who was a typical symbol of the strong woman. William’s mother spoke for the female. She spent almost all of her life to fight for rights for women to take part in the political participation. However, the person who brought Golding the most powerful influence shall be his father, who was a local school’s principal and was obsessed about study and research. To be exact, the enlightenment and the intellect are the things that Golding succeeded from his father;what’s more, under such a circumstance, Golding definitely favoured literature very much.

According to Golding’s background information, nearly half of his life was spent in this typical British family. During that period, he became a teacher as well. Unfortunately, things would never go with our wish. The Second World War broke out eventually, which also declared that Williams’ peaceful life had come to an end. Because young men were supposed to fight for their country. In this way, William entered the war as a lieutenant in 1940, and he joined the British Royal Navy. In the state of a captain, Golding had been into plenty of battles, like the battle for sinking German battleship Bismarck, Normandy landings and so on. His horrible military experience was a kind of two-edged sword. On the one hand, it had brought Golding too many painful and terrible memories; on the other hand, It was his military experience that played a significant role in his creation. All those ships, seafarers, and the sea, which appeared in his later works, were derived from it. When the war ended, this veteran began to think about philosophical questions of human nature. Then he tried to get back to his old track of being a writer, which proved to be very tough, but in the end, he knocked the door open with his first and marvelous novel “Lord of the Flies”. It was this book that established his style and his status in British literature history. 对《蝇王》中人性转变的分析(2):http://www.chuibin.com/yingyu/lunwen_206011.html
