4。1 The Garden of Eden

In the Bible

The phrase “the Eden” first appears in Genesis 2:8 And the Lord planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed。 From the place the tale was told, eastward of the Israel is the Tigris-Euphrates valley。 And Sumerian civilization was the first to exist in the low reaches of the alley。 In the Sumerian language, the word “eden” means “plain”。 (In the Beginning: Science Faces God in the Book of Genesis)文献综述

Here are four features for the Garden of Eden。

First, it provided a suitable environment that was just like a paradise。 The detailed descriptions can be found from Genesis 2:9 to Genesis 2:14。 There were trees good for food, rivers watering the garden, gold, bdellium and the onyx stone。 As we mentioned before, the word “eden”, which means plain, originated from Sumerian as far as the historical factors are concerned, Sumerian used to live in hilly regions where great efforts were need to find and grow food。 But from the tale “the Garden of Eden”, we can see food was easy to pick, and rivers irrigated the plants automatically and there were also abundant treasures。 Human beings were carefree and innocent with everything they need and want。 Therefore, the Garden of Eden was a paradise。
